On Sunday January 20th Michael and I headed to Iceland! Yup some of you might be asking yourself Iceland really? Why! Our response WHY NOT!!!! hahah But in all honesty the real reason is in December Michael's Aunt found an amazing deal that included airfare and hotel for Iceland. Michael has always wanted to see the Northern Lights so we made a quick decision to go. Well 2 of Michael's brothers and wives also decided to go as well as Michael's Aunt and Uncle and Mom and Dad!
In true Bishop fashion we fit 9 people but 8 bags of luggage in an 8 passenger car. Good thing the airport isn't to far way!
Wahooo we made it after a day of traveling. We first flew to Denver and had a 6 hour layover and then a 7 hour flight to Iceland! Since we made it to Iceland in the morning we checked in at our hotel, got ready and started a full day of site seeing. The first thing we did was a drive called the Golden Circle. Our first stop was Pingvellir Park. This is where the North American and European Tectonic plates meet and are separating from each other.
Since the plates are separating it is creating a valley. The picture above is is the valley that has been forming between the 2 plates.
Our next stop was Geysir. This is a geyser that blows 100 feet in the air about every 8 min. The water that is blowing out ranges from 80-100 degrees Centigrade. So super hot. Interesting fact about Iceland the island is really run with a lot of geothermal energy There are hot spots all over the place. I guess it makes sense since the island was created by volcano's and all!
This is a true Jill picture. She was waiting for the geyser to blow and she was all posed are ready for the entire 8 min. She was so funny throughout the trip always taking pictures ( A FIRST) plus always making sure her scarf was blowing in the wind or looking artistic like!
Our next stop was Gullfoss. These falls were gorgeous. They produce more horsepower then Niagara Falls.
hahah True Bishop Boys!!!
The sidewalks and parking lot was pure ice from the mist off the falls, as the boys went to take the picture Brent slipped and couldn't get back up!! I even asked Michael to slide down the sidewalk so I could video how slick it was, and so as a wonderful husband he did and totally fell!!!! hahah at least it is on video right?
The last stop was a church is Skalholt. It was where the first Bishop in Iceland is buried.
While walking around the grounds I noticed this door. So cool I love hidden doors and secret passages ways, when we went into the church and down into the crypt, David was being snoopy and found where the entrance of the door!!! It was used to connect the church to the school back when it was operational
Remember how we landed today after a long day of flying.... Ya we were exhausted!! I at least slept some on the plane but I don't think Michael slept at all so every time we got into the car within minutes he would end up like this! :)
After the church we made our way back to the hotel and took a nap! We then headed out of town to see if we could see the Northern lights. We were told by the front desk lady at our hotel(who was awesome!) that all the tours to see the northern lights were canceled because it was supposed to be cloudy, we went out anyways, stayed a little about an hour in one spot then went to another spot for about another hour didn't see anything so we decided to call it a night! WHAT A FIRST DAY!
